Piazza Bartolomeo Romano, 00154 Roma RM, Italy
One of Rome's most architecturally distinctive and historically fascinating neighbourhoods — a 1920s garden-city experiment designed under the Fascist regime for working-class Roman families. Architect Innocenzo Sabbatini created a series of low-rise residential 'lotti' (blocks) in a blend of Arts and Crafts, Roman vernacular, and stripped Baroque styles, arranged around communal gardens, fountains, and theatres. The result is one of the most visually cohesive neighbourhoods in Europe and one of the most fiercely community-spirited. Garbatella is now gentrifying slowly but retains a strong local identity — trattorias, craft bars, street art, and the baroque Teatro Palladium. A 10-minute walk from the Ostiense neighbourhood and easily reached by Metro B (Garbatella station).
