Roman Forum, 00186 Roma RM, Italy
A near-perfect 23-metre triumphal arch (203 AD) at the western end of the Roman Forum, celebrating Septimius Severus's victories over the Parthians. The four large reliefs are unusually detailed records of specific battles, and the arch was originally topped by a bronze chariot pulled by six horses. After Severus's son Caracalla murdered his brother Geta in 211, Geta's name was systematically chiseled out of the inscription — you can still see the empty spaces where his name once stood.
