Piazza Vittorio Emanuele II, 00185 Roma RM, Italy
A mysterious marble doorway from 1680, set into the ruins of a wall in Piazza Vittorio Emanuele II, covered in alchemical symbols, Kabbalistic inscriptions, and cryptic formulae. Built by Marchese Massimiliano Palombara — an aristocrat fascinated by alchemy and Rosicrucianism — the door is said to be the result of his search for a formula to transmute metals into gold. According to legend, he invited a mysterious wandering pilgrim to stay in his Villa (now the park surrounding the door), and the pilgrim vanished overnight, leaving behind only this enigmatic inscription and some gold dust. The Latin inscriptions are still not fully deciphered. Overlooked by most tourists who visit Piazza Vittorio for its market, it stands in the garden of the piazza, free to approach at any time.
